RISK ASSESSMENT

Risk factor assessment
After we were done with both location and the script we now did a risk factor assessment where we analysed and discussed any possible risk that our shoot might have. We rated each risk from a scale of one to ten, ten being the highest level of risk
We came up with the following points:
Film Risk Factors
(1-4)
Running -the boulders are there. Risk of falling down and/or getting hurt.
(5-6)
Showing ropes tied to the hand -might leave red marks or someone wrists might get effected
(7-10)

LOCATION SCOUTING

At 10 of December after we had discussed and finalized the story line that we'll follow, th next thing to do was to go for location scouting
We already had an idea that the setting in our story is of a forest like area and such an area could only be found in the Margalla hills. So at 10 December after our paper we left for monal restaurant, which is in that area, to see the nearby area.

After alot of looking at areas near the main road we went up a little on the road and right after Monal restaurant we found a track leading down into the woods. This place was perfect as our location

In that area we found two tracks going side by side and we also found an abandoned structure with no roof.  We finally decided that this is the location

SCRIPT (DRAFT)

After we were done with the location our next goal was to work on the script. We had first decided to have a draft script that we all agreed on and Later we'll decide what little detail and changes the story requires in order to add more suspense to the whole script or to make it more interesting.
The first script is:
*Scene 1*
1. Close up shot of a pair of hands (boy's) tied to a rope, trying to free themselves from the rope (boy 2)
2. A shot of an unconscious boy (boy 1) tied to a chair with a black cloth on his face
3. A paning long shot of all 3 tied together in the dark room with no roof and broken wall on one side
4. A close up shot of the sweating face of the girl (frightened)
(Or other opening shots that Ali decides)
1. Girl: "boy1 is boy2 alright" referring to the unconscious boy
2. Boy2: "don't think so"
3. A close up shot of the girl cutting her bracelet and using it to cut the ropes
4. Boy2: "what do you think you're doing, they'll kill us"
5. Girl: "just keep quiet and do as I say"
6. A 2 shot showing the girl who manages to cut the ropes and boy2 looking at her
7. A shot of the girl panicking in the effort to open boy2's ropes
8. boy2: "hurry up before anyone catches us"
9. Girl: "I am trying, don't confuse me"
10. A shot showing both of them going towards the unconscious boy
11. Boy2: "wake up! Hello (slapping his face)
12. Boy1: "w... wait.... what's going on...."

*CUT*

*Scene 2*
1. A tracking shot showing them coming outside the gate and running
2. Boy1: "do you know where you're going"
3. A close up of boy2 (irritated) : "away from them!"
4. The girl trips and falls down, boy1 helps her to her feet
5. Boy1: "are you okay?"
6. They all stop for the girl, girl: "Do I look okay!"
7. Boy2 : "Hurry up, there's no time they'll not be far behind"
8. A shot from the side showing them run
9. Various Shots from different angles showing them reach to the top (not the hotel but the area before it)
10. Boy2 : "what do we do now?"
11. Boy 1: A reverse zoom closing up to his face and then he pulls a phone out of his back pocket "found this at the table near the door"
12. Girl and boy2 look at each other and say at the same time (unintentionally) : " we should call him" ( not telling who are they calling will also raise questions, SUSPENCE)

*Scene 3*
1. A close up of the phone (phone rings and in the same shot someone's hand comes in and picks up the phone

6. "Plz describe the location you are at and the people you ran from"
7. Anonymous officer: "Hello, Hello.... are you there?

SCRIPT (IDEA)

When I made some friends I joined their group. Now I pitched in my plan that was decided up till now and they responded to it by saying that as it's not much different than what they had previously discussed, which was to shoot a scene in which a group teenagers are shown running and they call the police but we never get to hear what the teenagers said to the police which would create suspense. So we decided to merge the 2 stories.

Now what the idea we had in our mind was to show a scene that looks like a kidnapping and show how they escaped the place and call someone for help. This is what we all agreed upon on 10th of December:
Scene 1
• 1 girl, 2 guys
• Tied together in a dark broken building (on chairs)
• The girl somehow manages to cut her rope and then frees the rest
Scene 2
• All 3 are shown running
• On a thin track in the forest
• They constantly look over their shoulders to check if someones following or not
• They are panicking and running
Scene 3
• Call is received by the officer
• Parallel editing to show the friends running and the girl speaking on the phone
• The girl describes where she is (as she is not sure)
• Officer stands up and starts writing things on a paper
• But the call ends half way leaving the officer all confused.

Previously I was in Karachi and when I moved to Islamabad I had very little friends, hence I had decided to do my final project as a solo. So I started working on the idea that I had in my mind. The plan was to shoot the opening scene of a murder case. I had almost finished the shoot plan and was working on the shot by shot plan.

FILM PRODUCTION WORK FLOW

This week we learnt the 5 phases of production. our main focus was on the major three that are:-

  • PRE-PRODUCTION
  • PRODUCTION
  • POST-PRODUCTION
In easy words, Pre production phase is the phase that encompasses every thing that is done before the camera starts  to roll, such as:-
Screenwriting
Story boarding
Funding
Assembling a crew
Casting
Costume Design
Location Scouting
Set Design
Properties (“props”)
Scheduling.
We learnt the difference between a "SPEC" script and a "SHOOTING" script. Which all comes under the category of Screenplay. Then we moved on to story boarding, story boarding is a process in which sketches are made for each scene that will be shot just to get a clear picture of what is being shot, Mise -en-scene is part of story boarding. Story boarding also helps the directer correct and enhance the types of shots that each shot requires. Then came funding, as producing a film is an expensive project and requires funding for props, scenes, equipment, staff ,sets and actors. We also learnt about the importance of the Assembling crew. So on and so forth from casting to Scheduling which by far one of the most important things and also the least cared about when it comes to student projects.

PRODUCTION phase is the time when the film is actually being shot. Some aspects of PRODUCTION are:-
Direction:
  • DIRECTOR: Is the head and manages all aspects of production
  • ASSISTANT DIRECTER: Drives the set
  • SECOND ASSISTANT DIRECTER: Works with the actors

Camera operation:
  • Camera Operator: operates the camera
  • Cinematographer or DOP (Director Of Photography): oversees camera operation
  • Camera Assistants: loads camera, pulls focus
  • Clapper/Loader: loads film and slates scenes
Lighting:
  • Cinematographer: oversees lighting design
  • Gaffer & Electricians: Manages the lights
  • Key Grip & Grips: control the shadows and does special rigging
Sound recording:
  • Sound Mixer: records the sound
  • Boom operator: positions the microphone
  • Clapper: displays the clap slate for the camera
Acting:

  • Actors: perform before the camera

These tasks come under the Production Department.

POST-PRODUCTION: This is the time period which is after the film has been shot but requires final editing before it is released in its final form. Which includes:
Processing and printing of film
Transferring film to video
Synchronizing picture and sound
Paper edit (creating an EDL)
Creating a rough cut
Creating a online edit
Final audio mix
Film out & release prints

Why I Chose Media Studies

I have chosen Media Studies as my subject because I have an interest in photography and film making. Currently i have no intentions of pursuing this field as my career in the future because i want to be a Lawyer but if I do have a wish that i carry this hobby of mine and convert it into a passion. Regardless of the fact that it may not make me money because my Interest in this field is only for my happiness not for the potential financial source that it may become. If in the future my mind changes for any reason what so ever, and i chose not to be a lawyer, my next field of choice will definitely be the media industry. If i do not Pursue the Media field i will still have learnt the skill from this subject and i know one thing for a fact that a learnt skill can never go to waste no matter how useless you think it is, where as my skill from this subject is definitely useful.

Introduction:

My name is Hussain and i am a student of As at Beacon house school system Margalla  campus Islamabad, Pakistan. I have Media Studies, Psychology and Mathematics as my subjects and i am hoping to take law as my fourth subject in the coming weeks. I am not the best when it comes to studies but atleast I am able to manage it enough to not be considered a failure in academics in my own eyes, I am an active person when it comes to extra curricular activities. Previously in my O'levels i had taken part in many activities, such as cricket, photography, swimming, athletics, football, and the best experience was debating. I excelled the most in debating as I took part many local and one national competition. It was a shame that I could not win at the national level but at the end it is the experience that matters the most.
